Activities

Residents create and participate in a wide range of activities both inside and outside our village. It is your choice whether to participate in none, one or many activities. You should not wait to be invited. Simply approach a group engaged in an activity and tell them you are interested in joining in. If you're a little shy, initially go along with someone you know for support - they don't have to join in, just help break the ice. Most of us welcome finding someone else with the same interest.

Bocce or Petanque

A lawn is located adjacent to the snooker room on the south side of the Clubhouse, with equipment located in the snooker room cupboard. There are no scheduled Bocce events, however you may play at any time.

Bowls

Bowls is mainly played informally. Some formal events are indicated on the café notice board or in the newsletter. You can write your name on the notice board list for the event you want to play. A convenor for that event will generally allocate you to a team and position in that team. For some events those on the list draw lots for teams and positions. Inter-village competitions are sometimes played both home and away.

At any time between formal events, you can practice or play your own competition.  Learners are welcome, as most of us are rank-amateurs. Formal players contribute to a fund that covers the cost of prizes and food. Equipment is located in the storeroom on the north corner of the clubhouse. Your 01 key will open the door. Keen bowlers also join external bowls clubs such as Merriwa and Beaumaris.

Bridge

There are active bridge players in the Village.  They play during the evenings in the Cafe.  Please approach one of the residents if you would like to play.

Busy Bee

Aperiodically,  volunteers organise themselves to undertake a wide range of minor maintenance jobs around the village. This normally occurs on a Saturday from 10am and is followed by lunch at the clubhouse, also provided by volunteers. These events are advertised in the newsletter, on TV and on the clubhouse noticeboard. Many hands do make light work, so please consider joining in.

Canasta

Canasta, using Harbourside rules, is played on Monday and Thursday evenings starting at 7pm.  New players, whether you have played before or wish to learn, are welcome.  Simply turn up at 7pm in the cafe area of the clubhouse.

Choir

Our 'Harbourside Harmony Choir' of men and women sings together each Wednesday afternoon for an hour and half from 3:30pm. Choirmaster James Archer, a music student, has successfully melded disparate voices into competent performers. They receive support from a University of Western Australia program sponsored by Healthways.

They have a good repertoire of songs with popular appeal, which are performed at village functions and other venues: examples are City of Wanneroo naturalisation ceremonies and eisteddfods. New members are always welcome.

Darts

There are no formal darts activities at the moment. You may play darts informally whenever organised snooker or pool events are not scheduled. If there is contention between access to darts or snooker, then whoever was there first may choose or negotiate time sharing.

Gardening

The 'common areas' have a lot of gardens to maintain and a contractor is engaged for a certain number of hours per budget year to do this. We also have an active Gardening sub-committee whose efforts both reduce gardening contract costs and provide a way for residents to participate in making our gardens as good as they are.

Because of their efforts we are able to have a wide range of garden styles throughout the village instead of an uninteresting uniformity. You keen gardeners need to consult with this committee if you do not want your individual efforts tampered with.

Golf

There are no golf facilities in the village. However, there are a number of players who organise themselves to play together mostly weekly. The keener participants become members of nearby golf courses.  Sun City Country Club at Yanchep north of Mindarie is an example where membership is competitively priced. Another is the renowned Joondalup Golf Club & Resort, located 15 minutes south from Harbourside.  Most residents play casually at nearby public courses. Players find each other by asking around and indicating their interest. A putting green is also available behind the village's clubhouse.

Jig Saw Puzzles

A collection of jig saw puzzles is located in a computer room cupboard. You are welcome to borrow these for as long as necessary. You may also use the table in the computer room, but expect passers by to make contributions.

Knitting

A dedicated group knits incessantly to supply blankets for charity.

Mah-jong

A small group of Mah-jong players meets in the Panorama Room every Tuesday and Thursday at 2pm.

Pool & Snooker

Scheduled snooker is played on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6:45-7pm. The standard of play is mediocre to poor, but the company is great. Either gender is welcome to turn up on the night. Depending on numbers, attendees sort themselves into singles or pairs to play.

Both Pool and Russian Pool are played on the snooker tables. Numbered Pool balls are located on the scoring racks and snooker balls for Russian Pool are located in the cupboard. There are no scheduled Pool matches, but Russian Pool is scheduled for most Monday afternoons between 3-5pm. Russian Pool participants on the day sort themselves into teams prior to play. You are welcome to play (Russian) Pool whenever no matches are scheduled and darts are not already in play.

Private Functions

Residents may hold private functions in the village. This refers to functions with an invited guest list. Such functions must relate to residents. Functions related to outsiders cannot be considered because it would unduly and unfairly restrict residents' access to their facilities.

Rules under the Deed and policies have proved necessary. Please make yourself conversant with these before trying to book a private function, which must be done with Management's approval.

Reading

We have many avid readers of both paper and e-books to swap with and swap guidance on what might make good reading. There is also some swapping of magazines.

Rummiking

Rummiking (primary name Rummikub) a game of words or numbers, is played in the clubhouse on Wednesdays and Sundays. Times are listed in the calendar.

Sundowner

On most Friday evenings many residents gather in the clubhouse to discuss their week over their choice of drink and some stay on for an order-in snack. Some showcase our sociability by bringing visitors along. Nibbles are supplied by the Social sub-committee.  Volunteers staff the café to avoid crowding caused accidents.

Etiquette: Ask for your preferred drink from volunteer bar staff and place your contribution in the honour box provided.  Bring along small denomination currency, as there is limited change available. Volunteers also order take-out meals on most Fridays when there is no organised function; a menu is generally made available for the choice-of-the-night but note our volunteers cannot accommodate special tastes.

Sunday Afternoon

From around 4:30-7pm on Sunday afternoons gather at the clubhouse for a convivial chat. Simply turn up. It is a totally self-help affair. Attendees generally bring along a small plate of nibbles to share and some get quite creative.

Walking

Walking is a popular activity and regular one hour outdoor walks take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. Fit walkers take a one hour route from 8:30am and less fit walkers take a 30minute route from 9am. After the walk, most participate in a chat over tea/coffee/water at the clubhouse. Regular walkers contribute to a fund that buys birthday cakes. One Saturday a month those present celebrate the birthdays of walkers in that month.

Longer walks and outings also occur in the cooler months. These are arranged at the regular post walk chat sessions and generally are not publicised. Walkers keep abreast on their grapevine.

'In-home walking' so called takes place in the Panorama Room from 8:30am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This involves following a video demonstrating on the spot walking exercises. Turn up in comfortable exercise attire and tone-up.
